Curriculum: The Arts
Ms. Melinda
Art for all Grades Weekly
Melinda has taught over 30 years as a classroom teacher. She taught at Montessori Center School as both a classroom teacher and art teacher, at Isla Vista school as a GATE/ART teacher, and she has been teaching art for the past 5 years at SYVCS.
When she is not teaching here, she is working as an Art Educator at the Wildling Wilderness Art Museum, a docent for Sedgwick Ranch, and as an Arts Outreach teacher. Ms. Melinda loves to garden, paint, read, and eat sushi. She has three sons, 1 hubby, 3 jack russels, and 1 cat. She will continue to work with the students on developing their right side of the brain, based on Betty Edwards book, Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain.
Melinda hopes that you will feel free to visit the art room with your child and let your child show you the work they are adding to their portfolio.
Ms. Apolonia
Weekly Music for K-5th Students
I started my music career at the Royal Conservatory of Music in the Netherlands where I studied piano and singing. I also went to the Jaques-Dalcroze Institute in Geneva for Eurthythmics, did a lot of work for Dutch radio and TV, had my own piano studio, and worked in theatre for 13 years.
After immigrating to the United States, I participated in the American Academy of Dramatic Art, performed in the SBCC Symphony Orchestra and had my own studio. I have worked in the Carpinteria, Los Alamos, and College school districts.
I apply the CA State Standards for music and use years of experience and knowledge, plus my communication skills, to teach students in a very interactive way. I use the group dynamics and skills students have to build a solid music education and love for music. The first year I set them up with music history, different styles of music, playing an instrument, rhythm and beats, melody, harmony, note reading, chords, singing, and more. Students advance in music education as they grow through the grades.
Please stop by the music room anytime to watch and listen.
