Why choose a Charter School?
Just as no two children are alike, no one school can meet the needs for all children in our communities. Though educational trends come and go in popularity, the general form of delivery of curriculum has remained relatively unchanged. For decades, we have not moved far from the basic “3 R’s” as educational priorities for K-12 students. Though sciences of child development have expanded, our national educational pedagogy has remained generally “one size fits all”, often neglecting large portions of the population a teacher experiences in their classroom.
Independent Charter Schools are founded as public schools of choice by committed stakeholders (parents, teachers, community members) who are looking to create exciting and creative educational programs. Charter Schools are not in competition with other public schools, they are about opening up research, theory, and progressive ideas in education, improving upon and thereby supporting public education through innovation and choice.
Santa Ynez Valley Charter School was founded in 2000 by a dedicated group of parents and teachers who wanted an alternative education for children in the valley, one based on parent participation, cooperative principles and collaborative decision making. Our school is an non-profit charitable trust run by parents and teachers; our vision is to promote a supportive and challenging environment that focuses on the individual strengths of each child.
